Some children have special needs, which require the expertise of professionals skilled in remediation and skill building. At Mount Carmel Academy we have designed programs to help our families address the needs of their children.
Tutoring
Children transferring to Mount Carmel Academy frequently need help in order to achieve the grade level of our children. Occasionally our students need extra help in a subject area or with study skills. We have tutors who work with children after school and are available for an hourly fee at the request of parents.
Speech and Language
Mount Carmel Academy has a speech therapist who screens all new students for speech and language difficulties and is available for testing and speech therapy for students who have this need. The therapist and parent determine fees for this service.
Learning Disabilities
Any child who has been tested and diagnosed with a specific learning disability is eligible for our TLC program. Individual Educational Plans (IEP's) are written for each school year and reviewed regularly. Any student with a valid IEP may have modifications in their learning program and special report cards, if deemed necessary. A full time learning disabilities specialist services students and is available for screenings and consultations. Fees for this service are arranged with the principal and are usually paid yearly.
Success
This program is designed for students who have behavior problems or difficulty with social skills. It is short term, usually determined quarterly, and gives the student an opportunity to learn communication skills and appropriate behavior techniques to improve relationships with classmates and teachers. Fees are assessed quarterly when student need is determined.
Angel Fund
A fund has been established through the generous donations of parents, parishioners, and friends of Mount Carmel Academy, to assist families who need help with payment for special education programs. The principal is the administrator of these funds.
